How to Verify an Illinois Health Care License
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) licenses nurses and most other health professions, and its license lookup shows each license's status and expiration date.
Step by step
- Go to IDFPR and open the license lookup.
- Search by license number or name. Illinois RN license numbers start with 041 and LPN numbers with 043.
- Check the status, the expiration date and whether the license has ever been disciplined.
- Save a dated copy (print to PDF) in the employee's file.
For many nurses at once, IDFPR also offers a bulk lookup by license number.
Reading the status
| Status | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Active | Licensed and allowed to practice |
| Not renewed | Missed the renewal deadline; can't practice until restored |
| Inactive | Chose not to practice; must restore first |
| Cancelled, revoked or suspended | Not allowed to practice |
IDFPR's own status definitions are the final word.
